I feel the reason this UNCF/Koch Scholarship Program is different is because of the passion behind it. You may go to other opportunities of scholarship achievement and see that they don’t have annual summits, they’re not doing online activities. And then you may visit them and also see it’s just not the same atmosphere, it’s not the same environment. When you come here to UNCF, for me, I think finding a place, an environment, a program that I feel welcome in been the biggest thing.
Being a UNCF/Koch Scholar, has helped me see the other side of where I was. What motivates me the most … is where I come from. Having to go home to see my little sisters all sharing one room, and one bathroom for a lot of people. Seeing my mom work 8-hour shifts every day just so me and my sisters can a have “a normal life” – a life that many would see as “normal” – whether that be having money to go to the movies on Friday or having money to go to games.
I can remember I was in about sixth grade and I asked my mom if I could play football again and she just genuinely told me she didn’t have the money to do it. And that’s something that I’m never going to forget. I haven’t forgotten it today. And since sixth grade, I just never asked my mom for money. Why? Because I knew she didn’t have it and I didn’t want to have to hear her say that again. And that’s what’s pushed me as far as I’ve gone today.
