From London to Wichita and all points in between, global environmental health and safety audit manager Raphael Gosset faces a robust challenge: making sure Koch meets standards around the world by tracking compliance and reducing emissions, even in places where emissions standards are new or barely exist. A natural outdoorsman, Gosset’s passion for the environment has taken him around the world: from a hiking expedition in Nepal to Koch Industries’ headquarters in Wichita, a city that the Frenchman admits he could hardly locate on a map before joining Koch in 2011.
Gosset approaches his environmental work methodically, the result of a lifetime appreciation and respect for the planet that began at home. “It’s the way I was brought up by my parents,” he said. “We would not let the water run unnecessarily. We would not leave the lights on unnecessarily.”
And it’s those principles, albeit on a much larger scale, that keep Gosset focused on ensuring environmental excellence within all Koch companies across the world.
“It’s a win not only for our businesses but also the environment. That is key.”
“Seeing results is really what counts in the end,” Gosset said. “Because we get to go back to the sites and we get to see the actions being implemented, we get to see progress being made. That’s what’s really fulfilling to me.”
Gosset knows that environmental excellence comes from actions large and small. It’s not a choice between protecting the environment and profits. The environmental work carried out across our companies ensures that we are in business for the long-term. It’s not just about the products you make — it’s how you make them.
“Preventing an accident is value creation. Helping a site minimize their energy consumption is value creation. Helping a site understand a complex regulatory requirement and always working towards 10,000 percent compliance (100% compliance 100% of the time) is value creation,” Gosset said.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of his job is seeing the companies that Koch has acquired rise to the occasion.
“Seeing them have to change very rapidly and adapt to our culture,” Gosset said. “That was interesting. It’s part of the fulfillment. It’s seeing them improve and improve very quickly. It’s a win not only for our businesses but also the environment. That is key.”
